In preparation for your forthcoming surgery
You will be assessed in the pre-operative assessment clinic. Routine blood tests, swabs and an ECG are performed. Please bring with you a list of your regular medications and details of any allergies you may have.
If you are taking low dose Aspirin (75mg) as prescribed by your GP, please continue taking this medication. Other anticoagulants such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel (Plavix), Rivaroxaban will need to be stopped prior to surgery this will be clarified at pre-operative assessment. You may require heparin injections in this period if an anticoagulant has been stopped.
Please look after the skin on your legs prior to surgery, any cut or graze could preclude surgery until it has healed.
Any dental problems should ideally be resolved prior to joint replacement surgery.
Please avoid alcohol for a few days before the operation.
Patients who are listed for surgery are advised to stop smoking for six weeks beforehand.
Please bring comfortable clothes to the hospital with you. It is important to return to normal living as soon as possible after surgery. Men should use loose fitting baggy trousers and ladies should consider wearing a large comfortable skirt or baggy trousers, which are easy to put on and remove.
